LUCIE RIE: MODERNIST POTTER

Emmanuel Cooper’s celebrated 2012 biography of Lucie Rie: Modernist Potter to be published in a softback edition.

The Paul Mellon Centre/Yale University Press is to publish a softback edition of Emmanuel Cooper’s celebrated biography Lucie Rie: Modernist Potter on January 25th 2022 and it is now available to pre-order.

First published in 2012, this comprehensive biography provides fascinating insights into Rie’s life and work and examines her creative output within the broader context of modernism and the emergence of the studio pottery movement in Britain.

Cooper did not live to see the book published - the softback appears on the 10th anniversary of his death - nor the wonderful reviews it received. The Literary Review thought it ‘unlikely that this biography of Rie will ever be surpassed’ while Crafts magazine judged it 'a precious gift from the only man who could have written it'.

These additional images [not included in the biography] are of Emmanuel Cooper's research notes plus images taken by him of Lucie Rie, her work and studio.
